How many different kinds of amino acids are there?

Amino acids are considered as one of the most essential nutrients of the body. They are vital for healthy living. Amino acids are well-known as they are the building block of protein. There are different kinds of amino acids found in human body. These different amino acids takes part in numerous functions: building cells, tissue repair, protection against germs, and carry oxygen throughout the body 

There are total 20 kinds of amino acids, which falls in two major groups.

Kinds of Amino acids:

About 500 different kinds of amino acids have been revealed since now in nature, however only 20 among them serve as the constituents of human body proteins (muscles, enzymes, hormones, antibodies etc.). A Complicated combination of these 20 kinds of amino acids produces about one hundred thousand proteins which differ in function and structure both.

Basically, there are two kinds of amino acids:

1. Essential Amino Acids which can’t be produced in the body and must be taken from the food. 2. Non-essential Amino Acids are those which can be produced by the body.

Essential Amino Acids:

Between the two kinds of amino acids, these are not synthesized by the so they must be supplied by the food. Unlike starch and fat, essential amino acids do not store in the body for later use, so it is necessary to compensate an appropriate amount of this kinds of amino acids from food. These kinds of amino acids include Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Lysine, Threonine, Methionine, Histidine, Phenylalanine and Tryptophan.

Non essential amino acid:

These include alanine, aspartic acid, asparagine, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, serine, proline, and tyrosine. These kinds of amino acids are synthesized in the body and they do not need supplementation.

Supply of different kinds of amino acids from food:

Luckily, there is a sufficient amount of both kinds of amino acids are available in balanced diet. However, people who take unbalanced diet may be deficient in one or more than one kinds of amino acids, which should be fulfill through additional nutritional supplements.
