What are Common Types of Arthritis?

Arthritis is a disease which is characterized by mild to severe joint inflammation. It can be a natural reaction of body to an injury or can be a symptom of a disease itself. In fact, not all joint inflammations are arthritis they can be a symptom of other problems like gout. Only those inflammations are considered as arthritis who have occurred for a long period of time and recur. There are more than 100 common types of arthritis, we are here discussing the most common types of athritis among them.

Before the detailed discussion of some common types of arthritis, we should discuss its symptoms first, which include;

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Moreover fatigue

This is an important type among the common types of arthritis. It occurs when the cartilage of bones were gradually bear out. Hence, in the absence of cartilage protection, the bones rub each other, during movement. This friction causes pain and swelling in all joints especially weight bearing joints (hip, knee and facet). This often occurs when cartilage around the joints breaks down, or degenerates, by means of age or overuse.

Rheumatoid arthritis:

In the discussion of common types of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is a must to be disscussed. It is along-lasting disease which can affect all body jonts especially hands, wrists, and knees. It occurs because of the hyperactive immune response of the body which mistakenly attacks its own joints and causes the joint lining to swell as a reaction.

It is also among the common types of arthritis. Gout is a severe painful condition which occurs due to accumulation of the toxic substance (uric acid) in the body. This excess uric acid produces needle-like crystals around the joints which cause severe pain and swelling. Mostly, it affects big toe, knee, and wrist joints.

Other common types of arthritis:

  • Arthritis can develop as a secondary disease as in condition of infection. For example, bacteria which cause gonorrhea or Lyme disease can also cause arthritis. This infectious arthritis is more serious than other common types of arthritis.
  • Scleroderma is a dangerous systemic disease which involves the skin mainly, but may cause inflammation of joints, and internal organs.
  • Fibromyalgia syndrome is another factor which can cause joint deformity and act as secondary cause of common types of arthritis.

As it is mentioned earlier that there are almost 100 common types of arthritis, but we limit our discussion to the most common one only.
